There is an interesting and unusual region in Italy that has a diverse cultural and racial grouping that is concentrated in a small strip of land. This region, also known under the name of Italian Riviera, is called Liguria. The region is world famous for it's thriving tourism industry, with resort towns nestled amongst fishing villages and a scenic coastline.

Located in the northern west part of Italy, the region is of a long narrow strip of coastline on the border with France. It is composed of four provinces namely Imperia, Savona, Genova and La Specia. The capital city of this region is Genova, popularly known as the birthplace of Christopher Columbus.

Liguria's geography of mountains and seas is uniquely stunning. The coast is divided into two distinct areas. The eastern part called Riviera de Levante is made up of cliffs overlooking the sea with spectacular coves that you can explore. The western part called Riviera de Ponente is all bays and long sandy beaches with interesting historical resorts.

A lot of tourists come to Liguria not only for its historical places but also for its seashore, which is an uninterrupted string of resorts. Along the coast a lot of water activities could be done from windsurfing, scuba diving, water skiing, kayaking and sailing. In the inland areas you could do a lot of outdoor activities from horseback riding, hiking and mountain biking.
